Connie Lou De Jong

Connie DeJong, 64 of Oskaloosa and formerly of New Sharon passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. Upon reaching her heavenly gate, she joined her mom, her daddy, her big brother, Dwight and her twin sister, Bonnie. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the New Sharon First Christian Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held in the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Crystal Heights Care Center.

Connie Lou DeJong, daughter of Gilbert and Dorothy (Whitehead) DeJong was born on January 19, 1948 in New Sharon, Iowa. Connie started her education at a private school in Oskaloosa. In 1974, she started attending the Christian Opportunity Center (COC) in Pella. Then in January of 1981, she left her parental home and moved to COC, where she worked in their sheltered workshop. Connie enjoyed being a member of COC and dearly loved the staff and her friends. Connie considered COC her family and enjoyed all of the activities that she participated in. While at COC she excelled in the Special Olympics. Connie acquired her deep faith from her family, her COC family and her church family. She left COC in September of 2008, where she made Crystal Heights Care Center her home. She was a member of the New Sharon First Christian Church.

Her memory is honored by her brothers and sisters, Kay Elscott of Midlothian, Virginia, Twyla (Bob) Septer of New Sharon, Dick (Betty) De Jong Waxahachie, Texas, Linda De Jong of Oskaloosa; sister-in-law, Diana De Jong of New Sharon; brother-in-law, Arvin Roose of Peoria; 13 nieces and nephews; 18 great-nieces and nephews, with one on the way and one great-great nephew, with one on the way; many of whom have never met her but will hear about her legacy by the stories the family will tell. Above all, Connie was loved, respected and well cared for by her family.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Dorothy DeJong, one brother, Dwight De Jong and her twin sister, Bonnie Sue Roose.
