Samuel Glendening
New Sharon. Samuel Glendening, 88 formerly of New Sharon and Barnes City passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010 in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Monday, February 15, 2010 at the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery east of New Sharon with military honors given by the Coffin-Miller American Legion Post 446. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the New Sharon Fire and Rescue or the Coffin-Miller American Legion Post 446.

Samuel Edwin Glendening was born on July 25, 1921 in Hillsboro, Iowa to Clarence J. and Birdie J. (Herbeth) Glendening. He was a 1939 graduate of New Sharon High School. Sam was drafted in the United States Army in August of 1943, where he was then trained at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. On April 7, 1944 he left for England and was part of the invasion of Normandy 10 days after D-Day. During his campaign he was a platoon scout for three weeks until he was seriously injured in action. After he recovered from his injuries he returned to the front line, where he drove a radar truck. Samuel received the Purple Heart for his service in the war. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946. On July 4, 1943, Sam was united in marriage to June Groves in Lancaster, Missouri. To this union three children were born, Arlene, Dean and Jean. Sam farmed in the New Sharon area for five years before artificially inseminating cattle in the general area for 15 years. He also worked for the New Sharon Co-op, Sharps Texico and Calhoun Insurance Agency in New Sharon retiring in 1983. Sam enjoyed playing cards, square dancing, his team of mules and above all his family. He was a member of the Coffin-Miller American Legion Post 446 and DAV.

His memory is cherished by his three children, Arlene (Wayne) Shaw of Cedar Rapids, Dean (Gloria) Glendening of Sioux City and Jean (Dan) Kalbach of Oskaloosa; a sister, Beverly Glendening of Galesburg, Illinois; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, June and two sisters, Wilma Fry and Irma Parmer.
