Bud Cheney, 88 of Deep River passed away Monday evening, October 16, 2023 at the Brooklyn Community Estates. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Friday, October 20, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.  Burial will be held in the Golden Rod Cemetery at Deep River.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 19, beginning at noon with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.  Memorials may be directed to the Deep River Fire Department.  Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of the arrangements.

Kenneth "Bud" Marvin Cheney was born on August 7, 1935 at Deep River to Kenneth "Mike" and Duane Pierce Cheney.  Bud grew up on the family farm and graduated at age 16 from Deep River High School.  He farmed with his father before enlisting in the United States Army in 1954, where he served as an engineer and paratrooper.  Bud worked on bridges and drove a truck and was also proud to have made 13 jumps.  Following his honorable discharge, Bud moved back home and continued farming with his parents.  On October 18, 1958, Bud was united in marriage to Melva "Judy" Hamilton at the What Cheer Christian Church.  They became the parents of four children, Jeannie, Crystal, Marvin and Roger.  Bud was a life-long farmer, served on the Deep River/Millersburg School Board for over 25 years, served on the FS Board of Directors for 30 plus years, was a member of the Poweshiek County Cattlemen's Association, served on the Farmer's Home Administration Board for Poweshiek County and was a boys 4-H leader.  He enjoyed watching Hawkeye sports, attending his granddaughters' sporting events, playing cards and having winter potlucks with friends.  Bud loved to eat out and attend family reunions and events.  Family was his greatest joy.

Bud is survived by his wife of 65 years, Judy; his children, Jeannie (David) Pidima of Brooklyn, Marvin (Lisa) Cheney of Deep River and Roger (Jodi) Cheney of Deep River; his grandchildren, Chelsey (Justin) Evans, Cale (Brooklyn) Pidima, Mary Cheney, Michael Cheney, Ryan Cheney, Madison Cheney, and Krista Cheney; a great granddaughter, Carley Evans; his siblings, Dorothy (Don) Van Zee, Richard (Jenny) Cheney and Donna Benton; and sisters-in-law, Arva Cheney and Linda (Rocky) Wallace; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Bud is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Crystal Cheney; his brothers, Jim Cheney and Leroy Cheney; his brother-in-law, Ron Benton; and his nephews, Lonnie Cheney, Trent Cheney, Jeff Cheney and Rex Cheney.
