Doris J. Freeborn, 97 of Altoona passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 28, 2026 at Edencrest at The Tuscany Assisted Living in Altoona. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, May 2, 2026 at the Community Life Church in Barnes City. Burial will be held in the Barnes City Cemetery in Barnes City. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am and last until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barnes City Cemetery Association, St. Croix Hospice or an organization of your choice. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Jean Freeborn, the daughter of Jesse and Nola (Hasty) Hamilton, was born on February 19, 1929 in rural Delta, Iowa. She began school near Deep River at Gilmore No. 9 Country School through the 5th grade before her family moved east of Barnes City where she graduated from Barnes City Consolidated Schools with the class of 1947. On January 21, 1948, Doris was united in marriage to Sheldon Freeborn at the Methodist Church Chapel in Montezuma. To this union two children were born, Marvin and Mary.

Doris was a full-time farmers wife, working alongside Sheldon in the Barnes City area. Following Sheldon's death in 2001, Doris continued to live on the farm for a year before purchasing a home in Newton where her daughter lived with her to help take care of each other. In April of 2025, Doris moved to Edencrest of Tuscany in Altoona.  She enjoyed gardening, sewing, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, taking her coffee outside and sitting in the swing and "watching the world" wake up. She also enjoyed reading the Des Moines Register and the Newton Newspaper to catch up on daily news. Doris was a member of the Barnes City Ruritan Club, later known as the Barnes City Betterment Club and Lend a Hand Club. She also helped in the kitchen at the Barnes City Figure 8 Races and the Barnes City Fun Days events.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Mary Kirk; her daughter-in-law, Doris Freeborn; her grandchildren, Angela (Clayton) Smith, Karen (Laverne) Smithson, Sara (Daniel) Jimenez and Alexander Freeborn Kirk; her great grandchildren, Emily (Riley) Riedel, Marissa (Graysan) Peneston, Sierra Hallmann, Samuel (Jess) Hallmann, Calvin Smithson, Vincent Smithson, Trevin Smithson, Lila Pearl Jimenez, Weston Levi Jimenez, Juniper Fen Jimenez, Bowan Rye Jimenez, Silas Freeborn Kirk, Marlee Niveah Kirk; great-great grandchildren, Lizzie Riedel, Olivia Riedel, Theo Peneston, Harper Hallmann and Baby Peneston due in July; step great grandchildren, Alex Smith, Cody Smith, Dylan (Cadence) Hildreth, Norman Smith, Landon Swenson and Carmine Swenson; step great great grandchildren, Brandon Sorter, Katy Smith, John Smith, Lila Hildreth and Arlo Hildreth. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Freese and sister-in-law, Eleanor Hamilton along with many other nieces, nephews and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sheldon; her son, Marvin; sisters, Dorotha (Charles) Tinsley, Helen (Harley) Spain, Anna (Harry) Deucore; brothers, Charles (Hazel) Hamilton and Gilbert (Kathryn) Hamilton and a brother-in-law, Willard Freese.
