Harlan Heinen, 80, of rural Montezuma passed away Saturday morning, November 9, 2024 at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown due to complications from Amyloidosis from exposure to Agent Orange. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Burial with military honors will be held in the Guernsey Cemetery in Guernsey. Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma with the family present to greet friends and relatives from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Francis Gallagher American Legion Post no. 294 or the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight and may be sent to the Holland-Coble Funeral Home; In Care of Harlan Heinen; P.O. Box 727; Montezuma, Iowa 50171. Holland-Coble Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harlan Wayne Heinen, the son of Merril and Mildred (Wagner) Heinen, was born on May 21, 1944 in Brooklyn, Iowa. He graduated from BGM High School with the class of 1962 then enlisted with the United States Navy. Harlan was married to Carol Tuttle in 1967 and to this union two children were born, Tammy and Steven. They divorced in 1974. Following his honorable discharge in 1966, Harlan worked for Hall Construction building grain bins before working a few years at Amana Refrigeration. In 1974, Harlan went to work for Poweshiek County working his way up to lead mechanic. On June 27, 1980, Harlan was united in marriage to Stacy Myers at the Malcom United Methodist Church. In 1997, they moved to the farm east of Montezuma and in 2002, Harlan took early retirement from Poweshiek County after 28 years so he could farm. He farmed and raised Angus cattle retiring in 2021 due to his health. Harlan loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, loved to hunt and was a collector of coins, hats, tractors, old cars and anything else he could get his hands on. He really enjoyed working with his hands and tinkering and/or rebuilding tractors, skid loaders and cars. He was a 54-year member of the Francis Gallagher American Legion Post no. 294 in Brooklyn and a past member of the NRA.

Harlan is survived by his wife, Stacy of rural Montezuma; his brother, Howard Heinen of Brooklyn; his sister, Harriet (Don) Longnecker of Waverly; a sister-in-law, Moonyeen "Yen" Heinen of the Philippines; a brother-in-law, Gene Lacaeyse of Grinnell; along with many nieces, nephews, friends; a daughter, Tammy and a son, Steven.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Herb Heinen, a sisters-in-law, Arlene Heinen, Carol Vecera, Sammie Huntington, Diane Farrell and Mary Lacaeyse; mother-in-law, Vivian Myers and father-in-law, Marvin "Barney" Cook.
