Helen DeHoedt, 92 of Barnes City passed away Saturday afternoon, January 13, 2024 at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Memorial services will begin at 10:30 am Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Burial will be held in the Barnes City Cemetery in Barnes City. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the MHP Hospice Serenity House or the North Mahaska Education Foundation. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Louise DeHoedt was born at Exline, Iowa on April 24, 1931 to Lewis and Myrtle Drake Caldwell.  She attended Exline School and Centerville School before graduating from Exline High School in 1949. Helen attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College and received her teaching certificate in 1950.  She taught country school near Laurel, Ewart and Barnes City before she was married.  On June 5, 1954, Helen and Scott DeHoedt were married at the Exline Christian Church.  They became the parents of three children, Sue, Dennis and Patricia.  After they were married, Helen raised her children until Pat was four years old and then went back to teaching at Barnes City and then North Mahaska when the schools were consolidated, where she taught fifth grade for the next 32 years before retiring.  Helen attended night school receiving her B.A. degree.  She was also very civic minded helping with the caucuses, etc.  Helen was the most generous person to her family and friends.

Helen loved keeping busy and enjoyed sewing, quilting, oil painting, ceramics, gardening, all crafts, watching Bob Ross painting shows, played the organ and piano at church and was very artistic and creative.  Family meant everything to her.  She entertained her grandkids for a week's vacation during the summer which they all loved.  She was a member of the Union Mills Church and then transferred to the Barnes City Methodist Church where she played the organ.  She was also a member of the Barnes City Ruritan Club and the Barnes City American Legion Auxiliary.

Helen is survived by her children, Sue Clark of Barnes City, Patricia Robertson of Barnes City and daughter-in-law, Lori DeHoedt of Russell; her seven grandchildren, Buck (Shana) Clark,  Mike (Jeanne) Clark,  Cassandra DeHoedt, Jennifer (Scott) Bear, Nathan Robertson, Nicholas Robertson and Noah (Abbey) Robertson;  her great grandchildren, and her two great-great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Scott; her son, Dennis DeHoedt;  her son-in-law, Derrell Clark; her sisters, Lucille Eddy and  Doris (Jim) Steele.
