Larry Doonan, 87 of Barnes City passed away Saturday evening, May 30, 2020 at the Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. As was Larry's wish, his body will be cremated and no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barnes City Cemetery association and may be sent to the Holland-Coble Funeral Home, in care of Larry Doonan, P.O. Box 727, Montezuma, Iowa 50171. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.

Larry Mark Doonan, the son of Henry and Mary (Armstrong) Doonan, was born on April 1, 1933 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was a 1951 graduate of Barnes City High School. On May 25, 1952, Larry was united in marriage to Nancy Mason. To this union five children were born, Richard, Mike, Kelly, Jim and Jason. Larry was drafted with the United States Army in 1953 serving two years. Following his honorable discharge, he worked as a farmhand for Arlo Taylor, worked for Lutheran Construction building culverts and then for Ben Depree in Oskaloosa as a general contractor before beginning a long career in 1959 with Wheeler Construction and most recently retiring due to health reasons. Larry also farmed 40 acres and raised hogs in the Barnes City area. He enjoyed NASCAR, was a season ticket holder at the Iowa Speedway in Newton and attended races in Michigan for 30 years. He was an avid Kansas City Royals fan and attended several games. He also enjoyed going on Bus trips with his wife, Nancy. Larry was a member of the Fuller Sarvis American Legion Post #507, Ruritan Club, Barnes City Fire Department and he attended the Christian Church in Barnes City.

His legacy will be honored by his children, Richard Doonan of Barnes City, Mike (Brenda) Doonan of Barnes City, Kelly (Craig) Jackson of Phoenix, AZ, Jim (Ginger) Doonan of Newton and Jason (Karen) Doonan of Newton; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Nancy.
