Verna Sanderfield, 84 of Urbandale and formerly of Montezuma passed away Monday   morning, August 28, 2023, at the Deerfield Skilled Nursing Care in Urbandale. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am Saturday, September 2, 2023, at the Community Hope Church in Montezuma. Burial will be held in Guss, Iowa at 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon. Visitation will be held Friday, September 1, 2023, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Croix Hospice or the Just As I Am Cowboy Church in Paris, MO. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.

Verna Darlene Sanderfield, the daughter of Thomas and Ruby (Thomas) Moore, was born on November 20, 1938 in Culbertson, Nebraska. She graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1957. On April 26, 1957, Verna was united in marriage to Marvin Sanderfield in Bedford, Iowa. To this union five children were born, Debbie, Connie, Jeff, Gene and Gary. Verna was a dedicated housewife. Her greatest accomplishment was being a mother and raising their five children while Marvin was deployed. The family made several moves during his military service and Verna never complained, though all the responsibility fell on her shoulders.  Verna was the President of the Non-Commissioned Officers Wives Club at Fort Clayton in the Panama Canal Zone from 1970 to 1971.  Following Marvin's military retirement,  they moved to Newton, Iowa where she was the circulation manager for the Newton Daily News. She also worked at Morgan Jewelers then was a teller at a bank in Newton. In 2000, they moved to Montezuma and Verna helped Marvin with his business V&M Wood Factree. She also worked part-time at Fareway and Ahrens Greenhouse.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Montezuma.

Verna enjoyed embroidering, flowers, gardening, loved Southern Gospel music and the Sanderfields sponsored many Southern Gospel sings in Deep River.  Above all, her family was most important to her. She was also famous for her chocolate cake with cooked fudge frosting and her sweet iced tea.

Her legacy will be cherished by her husband of 66 years, Marvin Sanderfield of Urbandale; her children, Debbie (Keith Hulbert) Farrow of Waukee, Connie (Patrick) Ulysse of Murrysville, PA, Gene (Aimee) Sanderfield of Orlando, FL, and Gary (Michelle) Sanderfield of Sydney, Australia; 11 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two siblings, Dale Moore and Terry (Judy) Moore; a daughter-in-law, Chris Sanderfield of Dubuque and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jeff Sanderfield and a sister, Shirley Briggs.
