Bill Douglass, 99 formerly of Montezuma passed away Tuesday afternoon, September 8, 2026 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will begin at 11:00 am Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. A private burial will take place in the Union Mills Cemetery at Union Mills at a later date. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.

William "Bill" George Douglass, the son of Dale and Opal (Beatty) Douglass, was born on September 6, 1927 in Montezuma, Iowa. He graduated from Montezuma with the class of 1945 and worked part time at Brownells during high school. Bill enlisted with the United States Army when he turned 18 doing his basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington. He then served as an occupation troop for almost a year in Japan. Following his honorable discharge, Bill moved back and was a county surveyor.

On July 14, 1948, Bill was united in marriage to the love of his life Virginia "Ginny" Kline. To this union three children were born, Susan Joyce and Robert. In 1951, Bill started his career at AT&T working at the Ewart phone office before being transferred to Mason City in 1955. Bill continued working his way through the company living in several different cities along the way eventually becoming the district supervisor retiring in 1983 from the Omaha office after nearly 30 years.

Following retirement, Bill and Ginny sold their home and started to travel settling down in Las Cruces, New Mexico. While living in Las Cruces, Bill wanted a part time job so he went to work at UPS hoping to work in the warehouse but eventually being promoted to supervisor. Due to family health issues, Bill and Ginny eventually moved back to Montezuma to be closer to family. Following Ginny's death and his daughter, Joyce's death, Bill moved to the Montezuma Nursing Home before moving to an assisted living/nursing home in Waukee to be closer to his daughter where he enjoyed making his rounds throughout the nurses stations finding the candy bowls.

Bill enjoyed reading, traveling throughout the US; where he made many friends along the way, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles and Sudoku. He was a member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, the Montezuma VFW, the Montezuma Lions Club and served on the Montezuma Water Board.

Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Susan Douglass of Grimes; his son, Robert Douglass of Montezuma; grandchildren, Jessica Douglass-Eurich, Derrick (Melissa) Flippin of West Des Moines and Jarred Flippin of Nikiski, Alaska; great grandchildren, Keith Eurich, Kyle (Emma) Eurich, Addison Flippin, Gabriel Flippin, Kaylee Flippin and Emma Flippin; a great-great grandson, Luca Eurich; a sister-in-law, Lois Douglass of Montezuma along with many other nieces, nephews and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia "Ginny" Douglass; a daughter, Joyce Flippin; a daughter-in-law, Donna Douglass; his two brothers, Robert (Corinne) Douglass and Gene Douglass and a sister, Phyllis (Ben) Hopkins.
